Going Green
Big Springs 4H club helps lead Ed Brune High School into a Green Future
September 14, 2008
The official color of the national 4H organization is green. The Big Springs 4H club wants the entire Ed Brune School to go green as well. This year, the club is continuing the green tradition by encouraging the recycling of aluminum, plastic, and cardboard. The school will also begin recycling shredded office paper. Mr. D takes the recycling material to the Uvalde Recycling Center every Saturday. Teachers in the high school have been supplied with recycling containers by the 4H club members and club members help to collect the material once a week on Thursday. Mr. Mitchell has taken a load of shredded office paper to the Kerrville recycling center. The club hopes to expand the recycling to include the ranch residences and the middle school. There has been a noticeable decrease in the amount of waste filling the dumpsters on campus since recycling began last year.
The 4H club encourages all students and staff at Brune to be aware of waste and buy items in recyclable packaging. The school has installed energy saving compact fluorescent light bulbs in almost all of the light fixtures. Also the thermostats in the classrooms have been set on timers to go off on the weekends and after school hours. This should save a lot of energy. The 4H club would also like to remind students and staff to be aware of water conservation as well. Some easy ways to save water might be to avoid running the water when you brush your teeth. You can also take showers instead of baths. Wash full loads of laundry and reuse clean towels by hanging them up and letting them dry after you dry off.
